By the Numbers: Syrian Refugees

2,000,000

The United Nations estimates that the number of civilians who have fled Syria into neighboring countries has surpassed two million, another major milestone in suffering in what U.N. officials called “the great tragedy of this century, a disgraceful humanitarian calamity.”

While it took two years of conflict in Syria for the refugee figure to reach one million, the crisis produced the next million refugees in only six months. Internally, the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees estimated there are 4.5 million people who have been driven from their homes.
